Grant Lavac grew up in the small Sydney suburb of Crows Nest in New South Wales, Australia. Shortly after graduating from high school, at the age of 18, he became certified as a Personal Trainer and earned what money he could whilst studying full-time at the University of Western Sydney Nepean. In 2000, he graduated with a bachelors degree in Physical Education.
Fascinated with film and television, Grant pursued extra work whilst working in the Fitness Industry and landed an uncredited role in the Australian television hit hospital drama, "All Saints". But it was in mid-2000 that his love for film hit new heights when he worked as a background actor in George Lucas' science-fiction epic, "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" (2002). Thrilled to be working on an a George Lucas film, yet alone an actual movie set at Sydney's Fox Studios, Grant's fascination for film grew to the point where he knew that it would be his future passion.
In mid-2000, Grant continued working in the Health & Fitness industry and landed a job with the Australian distributor of sports supplement company giant, EAS (founded by fitness guru, Bill Phillips). There he helped several Australian sporting identities with their training, nutrition and supplementation programs. In early 2001, he travelled to the set of "Scooby-Doo" (2002) filmed at Warner Brothers Studios on Australia's Gold Coast in Queensland to offer product technical support to the cast and crew, which included Sarah Michelle Gellar of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame.
In late 2001, on self-funded travel, Grant's dream of visiting EAS Headquarters in Golden, Colorado (USA) came true. He spent an entire week with the EAS Team learning everything he could from the best of the best in the Sports Supplement Industry. He also met with 1997 Body-for-LIFE Challenge Champion and Director, Porter Freeman, made known through the now famous "Body of Work" (1997) documentary.
In January 2002, Grant was appointed Australian Coordinator for the world renowned Million Dollar Body-for-LIFE Challenge (sponsored by EAS). The 12-week transformation challenge evolved from the New York Times best-selling book Body-for- LIFE by EAS Founder, Bill Phillips. A year and a half later, Grant decided to say goodbye to EAS and the fitness industry and pursue another child-hood dream...living in the U.S. And that dream became a reality in June 2003, when he moved to Los Angeles, California to work with the Australian Consulate-General.
Renowned for its glitz & glamour, Tinsel town was the place to be seen and had no shortage of A-list events. That's why Grant wasted no time in September 2003, when he discovered he could purchase a ticket to the 55th Annual Emmy Awards. Attending the Emmy Awards had always been a childhood dream. Growing up as a teenager, he would watch the event every year on television, so seeing the event live was an unforgettable experience and it gave him the opportunity to meet many actors and actresses he idolized and admired, including legendary screen actor, Martin Sheen (The West Wing).
Coming off of the high from the Emmy's, Grant immersed himself into acting and began studying at one of the country's most respected Film Schools, UCLA. For six months, he learnt the principles of acting under the teachings of two seasoned actresses, Barbara Tarbuck and Beverly Sanders.
After a great year in Los Angeles, Grant returned home to Sydney in 2004 to pursue his acting, writing and film-making ambitions...and with some relative success. Grant acted in a number of short-films, Tropfest and student productions.
In 2005, Grant expanded his love for all things film and penned his first feature-length script titled "Prey for Survival" - the story of a group of uni friends who decide take a ski trip together but are forced to face their fears when they discover that a member of the group has suddenly vanished without a trace.
"Prey for Survival" went on to be selected as a Top 100 Finalist script from the over 1200 entries in the inaugural Project Greenlight Australian contest.
The competition was the brain-child of Oscar-Winners Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and awarded the winning screenwriter with a production budget of one million dollars to make their film.
Since finishing the first draft and thanks to the help of script assessors at Australian Screen Writers Guild, Grant has re-worked and polished the script, with the ultimate goal of one day optioning the final draft to a studio or production company.
Some months after completing the first draft of "Prey for Survival", Grant came up with a idea for a short-film about two campers who lose their way in the wilderness. The side- project gave birth to
"Prey for
Daylight", Grant's first major film production and it's inception also saw the creation of his own production company,
CzechMate
Films.
Operating on a very low budget and utilising the help of mainly family, friends and student film-makers, pre-production on the ambitious project began in late 2006, with filming commencing shortly after on location in national parks around Sydney, the Blue Mountains and Nundle, south of Tamworth. Filming wrapped in late 2007.
In addition to writing and producing, Grant also directed and acted in the film.
Since it's release in late 2007, "Prey for Daylight" has gone on to become the #1 watched short horror film on
NiceShorts, the online home of premiere short-films.
Grant is currently working on his next short-film project...
